There is an article in the current 'SAS Flightshop' magazine about Magne and his
art called 'Breaking Boundaries, Building Bridges'. It is of course fairly
general and aimed at the bored air traveller (!) so isn't exactly earth
shattering to the a-ha fan specifically, but in summary..........Magne quotes 'Music is still a great part of my life, and I find I can combine
the two expressions without feeling split. You know, it's like the farmer who
cultivates potatoes one year, to turn to wheat the next. The crop rotation is
enriching and the two inspire and feed off each other. But last year when we
toured, it was all pretty intense and I feel I now need maybe a year to focus
solely on my artistic work'.The article then goes on to talk about Magnes numerous exhibitions around the
world. Another extract......<He is constantly courted by new projects, ideas and people who want to work
with him. Currently he is involved with a new design hotel in Norway and for the
design company ACME studio (they do stationery etc - Emma's note!) and for SAS
Flightshop exclusively.>Magne and ACME have designed an exclusive ballpoint pen available from the
Flightshop for 560 NOK - that's one expensive biro kids!! ... 'The design on
this particular pen is based on my glass works' says Magne. He talks about his
'art philosophy' - 'It's about breaking boundaries and then building bridges
between different forms of expressions and their inherent possibilities'.Another quote: 'It is an incredible privilege for me to be able to explore my
artistic range by applying myself and any possible 'red thread' that may exist
through a variety of forms and expressions. They all offer various
possibilities. This has made me realise that my life is a constant quest for new
frameworks, where I myself often have a limited know-how to start off with and
where the framework itself offers certain limitations. This I view as a
challenge, as I believe that limitless possibilities only have a paralysing
effect, whereas framework and limits actually release creativity. Let's say that
you limit yourself in painting to only using the colour red - what a wonderful
opportunity to fully explore the nature of the colour - what a chance to free
yourself from the weight of all paintings made before you!'The article goes on to talk about the stamp project 'Pincette', the ceramic
statue due to be 'inaugurated' in Bergen this Autumn, his Jazz/Woodcut book
project..... more musings from Magne 'You know, it's like for every muscle you
exercise, you become a better athlete. And work itself brings more inspiration.
All my experimentation, all my work, carries me forward and onwards'.Another extract..... <It's like he can't stop himselfand his new ideas, no more
than he can stop himself from covering any piece of paper that comes his way
with scribbles and illustrations. 'My son's teachers must wonder whenever I
supervise their schoolwork why I can never just sign my name, but that there has
to be a rather annoying scribble to go with it!.The full article and pics are of course in the SAS Flightshop magazine, not
generally available but on all good SAS planes near you!Emma x
Gut, dass ich mit SAS nach Norge fliege :-). Mal sehen, ob ich das Heft bekomme ... Aber wenn es die Oktober Ausgabe ist, dann habe ich schlechte Karte. Ich fliege ja erst am 1.11.!
