I take it back! Just came out of Royal Arena in Copenhagen (attendance approx. 10.000) and Morten overall did VERY well. Of course a bum note here and there and not a lot of interaction but vocally really strong overall. I have to remind myself not to judge based on even what sounds like good quality YouTube clips. It never compares to the real live sound.
Enjoy the German concerts. They still sound great!

Freu mich schon aufs morgige Konzert in Prag.
Weiter geht's!

Teil der Show.
1. Teil - Hits und Favoriten der Band
2. Teil - Hunting high and low - Album
Zugabe

Perfekte Zusammenfassung!

Hi again,
Well, yes and no. I've read very different opinions from fans and other audience members. Some give the concert 5-6 stars (out of 6), a fair share give 2-3 stars or simply say the were disappointed with the sound and/or the lack of interaction with the audience or between the band members. Some enjoyed hearing the deep album cuts, some seemed to have missed the point that it's an album concert.
What I will say is this: Sycamore Leaves is a great opener for most hardcore fans, I think. The ones who would like the other audience members to know that a-ha is more than TOM, SOTR and FOTM. However, with an audience of approx. 10.000 last night I think a-ha get caught in a bit of a dilemma. Yes, HHAL has sold millions of copies 35+ years ago, but it doesn't mean that 10.000 audience members have listened to the album hundreds of times and certainly not in the past years. So for those people songs like Blue Sky, LABAT, Love Is Reason and Dream Myself Alive are already what you can call "unknown songs". So those people don't need to also be challenged by songs like Sycamore Leaves, Scoundrel Days, The Swing of Things and two new songs from True North. In fact, for the "normal" concert goer it means a setlist of 18 songs with 6-7 more or less well-known songs: Crying in the Rain, IBLY, TLD, HHAL, TSASOTV, TOM and - for some - Train of Thought. So naturally they are going to miss Stay On These Roads, Forever Not Yours (big radio hit in Denmark), Touchy! or even Cry Wolf or Manhattan Skyline. So, as much as I love Scoundrel Days and The Swing Of Things (and I do love them!) I also feel that a-ha overestimate how well-known some of their album songs are. Yes, anyone who's been to an a-ha concert in the last 10-15 years will have heard Scoundrel Days and TSOT, but unless you really like a-ha and listen to the Scoundrel Days album those songs are relatively unknown.
So what am I saying? I guess I'm saying that I think the beginning was excellent (sound still being calibrated during the first songs though) but I don't think it worked as something to get the audience going. It was maybe more of a "what the f***?" moment than a "wow, that's awesome!" moment for most concert goers. And I totally get that. When I go to a show with a band I know fairly well but not in-depth I do sometimes get a bit annoyed maybe if they don't play the 3-5 songs that I really wanted to hear.
Plus, even for a hardcore fan like myself it would be a bigger treat to hear a song like Touchy or You Are The One (fully knowing that they are not as strong as SD or TSOT) because they more or less never get played live anymore except for maybe at one show in South America.
I think they did a great concert, and for me it worked, but I think they challenged the broad audience unnecessarily who had paid approx. 60-90 EUR per ticket. I would love for them to do the arena tours with the big hits and lighting and video etc. and then the occasional smaller venue tour with just a band playing all the songs that would be a treat for hardcore fans.
It was a pleasant surprise to see the concert review in Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet where the reviewer notoriously can be extremely tough and negative. This time he wrote a very fair, sober and respectful review and gave the show 4/6 stars. You can no doubt google translate it as it's not behind a paywall.
"Transformed in the Royal Arena: A-ha reinvented the debut album ‘Hunting High and Low’ during a mature concert performance."
Another music magazine only gave 3/6 stars and pointed out all the things we already know: Lack of interaction, missing some hits, "new songs not as exciting" etc. etc. etc.

"A tame affair that was saved by the merits of the past and a high lower standard"
4½ out of 6 from me - and the ½ star is because of old love
Maybe there was an ant in the underwear??
Maybe there was an ant in the underwear??
Hier nochmal der Ameisensong und viele weitere. Magne beim Animieren und Morten beim gemeinsamen Singen.
