Hello again dear a-ha friends,
What a year it has been for us a-ha fans! And to round things off we have released another episode of our podcast “a-ha: Ranking Highs and Lows”, this time counting down what we think are the 30 best songs from Magne’s career outside of a-ha.
You can find the podcast on your favourite podcast platform by searching for “a-ha: Ranking Highs and Lows”, or you can find it all here: https://www.spreaker.com/show/a-ha-ranking-highs-and-lows
You’re also welcome to stop by our Facebook page and comment on the Magne episode or any of the other eight episodes so far: http://www.Facebook.com/rankingaha
Happy New Year 😊🍾🎉

Thanks a lot Frauke! (I also responded on our Facebook page 😉). We’ll see what we can do about the sound levels - it’s very useful feedback although we haven’t heard the issue mentioned before. We can’t do anything about our taste though 😄
But let’s see how it all goes when we get to Magne. We’re glad you liked the Morten episode, and we’re super grateful for the kind feedback!!

Hi all,
There is a new episode out today of the “a-ha: Ranking Highs and Lows” podcast that I’m making together with a couple of friends - some of you know the project already and have been kind enough to listen to the first seven episodes.
Today’s episode is 2 hours and 24 minutes with focus on Morten’s solo career! We have made our own top 30 of the best Morten songs and count them down one by one. You might not agree with the list, but hopefully you’ll find it entertaining!
Just search for “a-ha: Ranking Highs and Lows” in your podcast app or visit us at our Facebook page.
Viel Spaß!

That’s our top 4 from the Ranking Highs and Lows “True North” special 😄 Summer Rain at 4, Oh My Word at 3, Bumblebee at 2 and HITH at 1.

i just found the time to indulge into the rankings and boy did i enjoy it, thanks a lot!! 😃 Just to have so much a-ha expertise to dive into, and to hear your childhood experiences which kind of matched mine, as i also was around 10 when the a-ha journey started for me.. Pure nostalgia, thanks for a great day! 🥰
Aww, thank you so much! That’s really a wonderful piece of feedback and lovely to hear about your experiences as well. There definitely are some parallels between being a young girl in Austria and a young boy in Denmark 😄
And nostalgia is a strong force - definitely one that also colours my love for a lot of the a-ha songs where I “objectively” know that it’s not a fantastic song but I still love it for all it has meant to me growing up.
We hope the solo ranking episodes that we’ve started preparing for can live up to the first season. But thinking of your stories of floating aunts: If you haven’t already seen it then look up the video for Isotope by Savoy on YouTube. That ought to be right up your alley 👻
Thanks again for your kind words. They mean more than you know!

FOTM is in my opinion a rather poor example seeing as it’s not a willing collaboration but rather a forced collaboration that Pål had to accept. I wouldn’t call that either working or writing together - rather the result of an externally sourced producer joining two songs together with Morten on vocals.
Bandstand is more likely a “true” collaboration and is OK - in my opinion - but also not more than that. But then again: just different people with different preferences and taste - and luckily enough good songs to go around 😊

Same here. I love all three 80’s albums dearly (even the sometimes criticised SOTR) and I love EOTSWOTM and MB. Since then there are plenty of songs that I love, but when we talk about full albums from 2000 onward it’s more “like” than “love” because they either suffer from questionable production or from uneven song quality or even both.
So for me it’s less about how the songs are dressed (I love a synth song like Shadow Endeavors or Start The Simulator but can’t dig up any love for Forest Fire) but much more about the inherent quality of the song - but quality is probably as subjective as taste.

Here are at least one other “Geist” who fully agrees.
And I don’t understand the complaint that it doesn’t sound like a-ha. Neither did IBLY when that was released. Neither did DITN or Cold as Stone. My point is: Until someone pushes the boundaries We’re all stuck with the same…
On that note: Most of Magne’s songs on TN also do not sound like “classic a-ha”. I’m In doesn’t sound like other a-ha songs. There isn’t another song in their catalogue that sounds like Bluest of Blue or You Have What It Takes.
So I think both Pål and Magne are taking the sound in a new direction for a-ha. In this case I’d just be more interested in following Pål’s direction than Magne’s…

Magne has probably made a painting and cut it into 2000 small pieces that are being sold with a CD version of True North for the modest price of 150 € (plus postage of course). And I always end up buying it… 🤣

But Magne DID call it a sister song to SOTR so the link is definitely there. It’s of course not a copy but definitely strongly inspired - on purpose. Which also makes sense since SOTR had the working title Sail On My Love.

Super cool song! Very "See The Beauty..."-like.

True North doesn’t chart in the Danish album charts primarily due to not getting enough streams, but it does reach the top 10 on the vinyl charts as it enters at number 9. Behind albums like Older by George Michael…

Danke meine Herren
Our pleasure! I personally also had Make Me Understand as my number 1 after the first couple of listens, but other songs got pushed in front of it after some additional spins. But I still think it’s super catchy!
And totally agree: songs will move around as time passes. Next year the list could look very different. Would be interesting to check after 12 months which tracks each of us has streamed the most 😄
And expert talk - I don’t know about that We’re not saying anything that the dedicated followers of this forum wouldn’t be able to - we just have a platform to do it! But ret nice to know that we aren’t talking complete nonsense!

Very interesting to follow all the ratings and the arguments. I've worked on my ranking as well (rather than a rating), and tomorrow I'll meet up with the other two guys from the "Ranking Highs and Lows" team and record a new episode of our a-ha podcast where we'll do a special on True North and rank all 12 songs from the worst to the best.
So I hope you'll give the podcast a listen when it's been edited - maybe already later this week
And in case some of you don't know the podcast already: Last year two life-long a-ha fans from Denmark (Jesper and myself) ranked 147 a-ha songs from the worst to the best and released it as a podcast in six episodes. You can search for "a-ha: Ranking highs and lows" in your preferred podcast app, or you can find the six episodes here: Ranking Highs and Lows podcast

That would be really cool! Looks promising. (Although I will forever be a traditionalist when it comes to charts: ever since it became a mix of digital and physically sales, streaming and airplays it’s sort of lost its meaning to me).
