INTERVIEW: In The Winner’s Circle With “Rally Road Racers”
The Summer Movie Season heats up with a terrific new animated feature the entire family will enjoy. It’s Rally Road Racers — in theaters nationwide this Friday…
    www.animationscoop.com

Aus einem Interview mit dem Regisseur:

    Quote

    JM= Jackson Murphy (Kolumnist)

RV= Ross Venokur (Regisseur des Films)

JM: There’s a sequence involving the song “Take On Me” that’s not just using the song. You were clearly inspired by the music video, right?

RV: Yeah, absolutely. My concern with [Illumination] using “Take On Me” in “Mario” was that they did what we did with the video, which was: We really emulated the video and called-out the look of the video. It’s a really nice and surprising moment in the movie. I’m so happy that they didn’t do that. My whole generation associates that song with car racing because the imagery is so strong. It was in my mind from early on. There are four major races in our movie and what we learned was… I actually picked it up from a MasterClass Ron Howard gave where he was talking about the boxing movie he made [“Cinderella Man”]. They learned very quickly that the most boring sequences of the movie are the fights. You think that’s why you’re there but it’s really hard to keep that dynamic over and over again. So I realized… that each race has to have a different flavor and feel so they stand apart and you don’t feel like, “Oh my gosh. There’s another race going on.” From that came this idea in my mind of a-ha and we went for it. And it became the most complicated sequence in the movie. Now, I love it. We nailed it in the end.

JM: It’s a highlight scene in the movie and a visual treat for fans of a-ha and the music video.

Older viewers will love the tunes. My favorite scene is a takeoff on the instantly recognizable A-ha video for “Take On Me” from 1985 (you may remember it involves racing.)

In celebration, Fandango debuted an exclusive clip from the film, where Zhi must put himself in the proper mindset for the extremely challenging test of his driving skills, so he watches a video of what might happen.

Set to the uniquely memorable "Take On Me" (by Norwegian pop band a-ha), the clip pays tribute to the song's famous video by following Zhi into a black and white world of racing through the treacherous course.

10 Most Commonly Used Songs In Movies & TV Shows
Commonly used songs in films and TV.
    screenrant.com
    Quote

Using the right music in movies and television shows is vital to fully immersing the audience into the world of the story, but there are some songs that have been used more than others. Storytellers can create a full soundtrack around the whole narrative like Baby Driver and Guardians of the Galaxy. Music can also be used to deepen a specific moment, like at the end of The Graduate when "The Sound Of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel played as the main characters drive away in silence.

Music notably emphasized how unpredictable Mr. Blonde was, as he sang along and danced around to Stealers Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle With You" while he tortured the cop in Reservoir Dogs. Movies and television would be nothing without the music helping to shape the story that is being told. However, with all the music in the world, there are a select few songs that have been utilized more than any most. Utilizing what-song, that tracks song utilization in television and films, here are 10 of the most commonly used songs in movies and TV shows.

10 "Take On Me" By A-ha

    img_5572.jpg?q=50&fit=crop&w=1500&dpr=1.5

"Take On Me" by the Norwegian synth-pop band a-ha has been used 29 times, primarily in comedy TV shows like Family Guy, The Goldbergs, Superstore, and Mixed-ish. It was also used in The Last of Us season 1, episode 7 to illustrate Ellie's journey and the significance of her relationships. Plus, it appeared in movies like Deadpool 2, A Dog's Purpose, and most recently The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Its presence in the movie actually carried special meaning, considering it was the #1 music single in the United States when the Nintendo Entertainment System launched in the US on October 18th, 1985.

    OK, danke, Janina-ha!

Dann ist hier also nicht der Song gemeint, sondern eher wörtlich das "Nimm's mit mir auf", also die Herausforderung des Gegners (was dann ja zur Kampfszene passt).

Rally Road Racers (2023) Movie Review from Eye for Film

Venokur makes some odd choices along the way. There’s a sequence based on a-ha’s Take On Me video from 1985 which will make no sense to most young viewers or their parents, though older audience members will be in stitches. The film’s overall quirkiness, however, means that he just about get away with it.

There’s also a well-drawn but narratively inexplicable spoof of Swedish band A-ha’s classic Take on Me video, although it’s doubtful any of the younger viewers will get the reference. This is very bizarre stuff, even within the traditionally weird parameters of cultural representation in cartoons, but kids won’t mind as it’s one non-stop riot of colour and vroom-vroom movement.

'Rally Road Racers' review: Dir. Ross Venokur (2023)
Animated family films are a tough cookie to crack and outside of your Illumination, Pixar and Disney, as well as the occasional Universal/ Dreamworks effort,…

These days, animated movies of this kind tend to work in a number of different ways at the same time. A perfect example being this year’s stand-out Pixar film Elemental which manages to work on two levels; one as a pleasing adventure for the younger crowd, and the other for us big kids, selling us themes and thought-provoking subject matter, as well as having that lightening bolt raw emotion, reducing one and all to tears of joy and sadness. Rally Road Racers is streets away from anything like that, but with nods that’ll bring a smile to viewers of a certain age – a specific stand-out being a sequence referencing A-ha’s’Take On Me’ music video from the 1980s – and an exciting, very well animated visuals that whips along at a pace, there’s a lot to like about the film. It’s certainly a welcomed stop gap between the kid-pleasing blockbusters from the summer and the forthcoming October and Christmas-lead-up half term when the next big budget family flicks roll into town.

Und dazu läuft "Take on me" von "Aha" als Unplugged-Version.

It was Brühl’s idea to improvise a scene where Lagerfeld dances by himself, seemingly on the brink of a breakdown, while de Bascher drowns his existential dread in a drug-fueled outing at a nightclub. Though he was listening to classical music when he shot it, the final sequence that jumps between the two characters is set to Aha’s 1985 hit “Take on Me.”

“It’s great, and I love seeing the despair on both sides,” Brühl says of the end result. “I wanted in this little intimate dance moment to tell the whole journey, all the frustration, all the anger, all the humiliation, all the sadness and tenderness that he cannot.”

In this year’s other fashion series, The New Look, Christian Dior and Coco Chanel felt like animatronic creatures in a diorama. By contrast, Becoming Karl Lagerfeld feels urgent and alive — like a present day story that happens to be set in the past. Whether it’s Jacques’ desperation, Karl’s impacted passion or shocking betrayals, the show pulses with feeling, even wringing genuine poignancy from the pop song “Take on Me.”

It’s on this ride that the Millers loosen up a bit, making plans to salvage the day with a movie and Chinese food. When Lisa scrolls her phone for music to play, Manda pesters her daughter to cue up something by her childhood favorite, A-ha, which in turn prompts her to tell the story of one of her and Eddie’s first dates. He “decided to test me,” showing up in a “daft pink wig,” she recalls. “Everyone was laughing, but your dad never cared when people laughed at him.” They were around 13 years old, at a school dance, which of course meant that most of the kids were too shy to get their groove on. Finally, as “Take On Me” came over the speakers, Eddie got on the floor and started dancing all by himself. According to Manda, the ridicule continued; as Eddie remembers it, the other kids “were loving me Northern Soul dance moves.” Then, with all their peers watching, he slipped, fell on his nose, and got up with a face covered in blood. “Everyone was just pissing themselves,” Manda says. “And then he said, ‘I’m bleeding here!’”
