DULL AS IN A TANK
(translated by Stina Karremans)This is definitely true what people say: "A bad beginning will not lead to
a good end". The members of the norwegian trio were almost two hours late at
the press-conference at the hotel "Mariott" because their plane... has
landed at the wrong airport. There's nothing special in it for Moscow's
journalists, so what if they're late, the most important is they have landed
at the
right city at all. The musicians looked very tired, didn't tell anything
especially interesting, but who cares about that at the sight of the
forthconing concert, where the one of the most loved by russians european
bands was supposed to do their best.Unfortunately, a-ha didn't do anything special - the concert of this year
cannot be in any ways compared with the one last year. Firstly, the terrible
sound - it wasn't worked out even by the end of the program, which is
completely nonsense. The new backvocalist who according to the musicians
"was found at the bar where she was singing" ("Hey girl, will you go with us
to Russia?" - "Why not!"), was actually singing quite ok, but we got the
feeling that she just didn't hear the vocalist Morten Harket. And Morten
(nervously picking at his earphones) seemed not to hear neither her nor
himself. Their voices often just went different directions. And the
soundengineer was also likely to hear nobody. Like not playing the music but
riding in a tank! There are no questions to the contents of the concert - old hits and the
songs from the last album "Lifelines" were played including the hit Forever
Not Yours and sounding like nothing You Wanted More. Suddenly the song
Locust was performed (with an accordion played by the second keyboarder)
from the underestimated album Memorial Beach (1993), after the failure of
which the members of the trio went away from each other for a few years.Lifelines is quite a week and mediocre album, however it succeeded on
autopilot, on a wave of the success of the previous album MEMS to hit the
tops of the charts. All in all, if all the european tour goes with the same
quality, we can easily talk about the end of the band a-ha. At least, on the
field of the live concerts. After the show the band have been hanging out in Moscow for a while. On
saturday the keyboarder Magne Furuholmen, the backvocalist and almost the
entire accompanying band were seen at the nightclub "16 tons" (which is
likely to become a night stop for guest celebrities) at the concert of the
french band Telepopmusik. And the next day a-ha headed for Minsk.
