Diets, manicure and vomiting on stage
a-ha have their own take on the rock'n'roll myth
Some bands do their best to live up to the myth of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll, but a-ha have a whole different kind of experimentating going on. Read about the Warsaw-gig and how the band’s health experimenting reached new heights in Poland.
Magne with the colon hydromat and therapist
The Lifelines Cure
The members of a-ha have been very conscious of what they eat for a long time. Morten and Magne have both been on a blood type diet for some time. Magne still is, but Morten now takes advice from his personal physical therapist on what to eat. As he says, this advice rarely contradicts with what the blood type diet prescribes. In addition to the blood type diet, Magne and the Swedes in the backing band (Per , Sven and Christer) have just started an anti-candida diet. They started it in Brazil, and it’s supposed to go on for the whole tour. It basically means that they avoid all food with sugar or yeast, and drink no alcohol. The conversations on this tour very often revolve around the subject food – what to eat and what to avoid. A typical conversation can go like this: Christer: “Can we eat this?” Magne: “Noo…I think it has wheat in it.” Sven: “Avoid!” And sometimes someone discovers something like fresh ginger in the catering, and they all get very excited and gather around the food to fill up their little zip-bags that they bring on the plane or bus. Magne is now known as the “food prophet”, and the backing band as his “diet disciples”. More people have joined the disciples though; both Anneli and Lauren have decided to give it a try. Paul is the only one in the group that’s not on a diet. “They’re trying to get to me, though, I can feel the pressure,” he smiles.
Tor Stegny, Warsaw, September 12
For Magne and the backing band however, the health experimenting goes far beyond this diet. They have solarium, manicure, pedicure, skin peeling and aroma therapy, and they work out every morning. Magne has officially renamed the Lifelines Tour the 'Lifelines Cure'. In Warsaw they found a new way to expand their health project, when someone heard that this city was a good place to get hydro colonic therapy. Of course, they all liked this idea, and so the tour manager called up the promoter in Warsaw to make an appointment for colon cleansing. The promoter said she’d had strange requests, but she never had this one before. After they had the hydro colonic therapy, Christer and Per felt fine, but Magne and Sven felt a bit sick. “That was a mellow experience,” Magne laughs. “She boldly went where no man or woman has ever been before.” Before they went on stage that evening, there was a frantic search for a bucket to keep on stage so Mags could be sick if he needed. Sven’s last words before walking on stage were “is there a toilet near here?” Magne didn’t need the bucket, but during ‘Stay On These Roads’, Sven felt so sick he had to throw up in it. And he did – while playing bass, not missing a tune! “Well, the show must go on,” he laughs. “I am a professional, you know.” -
