By Matt Rooney Published Jun 16, 2021
From the heartbreaking to the terrifying, these are the best moments from the acclaimed sequel.
3. Take on Me
Image via Sony Interactive Entertainment
Speaking of Ellie and the guitar, her fiddling with “Future Days” in Seattle turns into an impromptu "concert for one" as she serenades Dina with A-ha’s “Take on Me.” It’s a warm and heartwarming respite from the doom and gloom of the game’s world. It also reaffirms how well the development team embraced the power of music and its ability to be a tonic for all troubles, an emotional through-line that can connect us all. And it’s, you know, sweet and whatever, I’m not crying you’re crying.

5 Times When Music Transformed A Video GamePicking the right music to fit in with a game can create something truly memorable, as evidenced by these fantastic video game soundtracks.gamerant.comZitat
3 The Last of Us Part 2
With The Last of Us Part 2, Naughty Dog managed the nearly-impossible task of finding the right balance between showing the sheer brutality of living in a world where death is always a moment away, and the beauty of small moments shared between two people. One such moment includes a cover version of "Take On Me" by A-Ha. As most people know, this 80s classic is very poppy, but the version played by Ellie on an acoustic guitar is a world away in terms of its tone and feeling.
For a game filled with horror and the worst examples of humanity, there are just over four minutes where there is nothing but love shown between two people as the rest of the world melts away. The other side to the style and inclusion of this song is the sense of melancholy because players know this moment won’t last, and the crushing reality of survival in a hostile world will soon take over.

80s Means Trouble
Ellie is a very smart girl who quickly deciphers Joel's secret code with Bill and Frank. She mentions that if the radio plays a song from the 60s, they don’t have anything, the 70s is when they have new items, and the 80s means that there’s trouble. While the radio and song references are never mentioned in the game directly, the idea of it is still an easter egg.
The 1980s has been used a lot in the horror genre as of late, notably in the film It and the Netflix series Stranger Things. In The Last of Us Part II, we famously get an acoustic rendition of the 1985 song, Take on Me by A-ha. A song that later turns into a moment of pain and sorrow. The radio and song choice is a terrific homage to the second game and the horror genre as a whole.

Interessant... HBO hat beim "Last of Us"-Trailer "Take On Me" entfernt!

“Take On Me”
When Ellie’s backstory begins in this week’s episode, fans quickly discover that she has a Walkman, which she also carries in the game, and is seen listening to a cassette of the 1980s pop band A-Ha’s top hits. One of their most iconic songs is Take On Me, which is heard playing in the background when Ellie and Riley arrive at the mall, and Ellie discovers the escalator for the first time. This song is important as in The Last of Us - Part II it is revealed that it is one of Ellie’s favorite songs, and she even sings a cover version. The song was also used in the final trailer of The Last of Us series.

Last night, Ellie experienced her own love story, though it was short lived. As Ellie and Riley embark on a night of seemingly mundane adventures down escalators, riding carousels, and playing arcade games, several iconic 80s tracks can be heard faintly in the background, and fans of the show feel that they were all meant to be foreshadowing of Riley’s untimely death. The 1985 hit “Take On Me” by a-ha can be heard as the pair first journey through the abandoned mall–and the lyrics tell a story. The track details a narrator’s desire to share their romantic feelings with someone before they leave, which is exactly what Ellie does with Riley.
