Cool!

10 unvergessliche MTV Unplugged-Momente

MTV Unplugged—5 Intimate Performances to Remember
There are acoustic sessions, and there are MTV Unplugged sessions. Since 1989, MTV has played host to hundreds of musicians from studios across the globe, offering up new takes on beloved songs in front of a live audience, and broadcasting on TV.
While MTV Unplugged, one of the first to spotlight the power of acoustic sessions, has been a household name since the channel began airing episodes, their sessions have been less frequent, marketed as “limited-run” since 2000, and some only appearing online. However, back in the series’ heyday, not only would artists sometimes receive a television broadcast of the performance, but select artists would also receive an album release; these included acts like Mariah Carey and Alice in Chains. Some have even won Grammys for their sessions.
Here are a few of the finest performances to be released under the MTV Unplugged name.
...
5. a-ha (2017)
Norwegian pop band A-ha is often dismissed as an ‘eighties’80s fad, but in 2017, they were granted the opportunity to show off their musical prowess in big ways. Up until this performance, MTV had tried desperately to get the band onto Unplugged for a decade, but busy schedules kept pushing it back.
The session received a DVD and album release as MTV Unplugged: Summer Solstice, and it shows in the production quality. Compared to past MTV Unplugged sessions, greater attention is paid to the shot composition and editing to capture a cinematic feeling. A live audience at Giske Harbour Hall in Norway towers over the stage, but quietly takes in the session’s magnitude.
A-ha, of course, performed a rendition of their 1985 smash hit “Take On Me,” but other standout tracks include “The Living Daylights,” and “The Sun Always Shines,” joined by Ingrid Helene Håvik.

09.26.23A-ha performing live for MTV Unplugged Summer Solstice
According to NPR—and the ABBA blaring from my young adult daughter's headphones—we're in the midst of an 80s music revival. As a Gen Xer who came of age in the 80s, I think most of that decade should stay locked in a time capsule, but there are a few songs that have managed to remain timeless despite the synthesizers and bad hair.
A-ha's "Take On Me" is one of them. Despite its consummately-80s sound, the song with the famous sketch animated video is still enjoyable (if not a little earwormy—good luck once it gets stuck in your head).
But a lesser-known 2017 arrangement of the song is actually, miraculusly, even better. A-ha performed "Take On Me" for an MTV Unplugged Summer Solstice album, and it's significantly different than the original. The Norwegian band filmed the performance live on the island of Giske, dropping the electric piano as well as the tempo for a stripped-down version that has become a fan favorite. As of this writing, the video has 97 million views on YouTube.
"Take On Me" is one of 17 songs in the unplugged performance, but naturally the most popular.
“We’ve talked about this idea for so many years," guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy said. "And in many of our concerts we’ve also played some acoustic songs. But if you consider that we don’t use much technology at all when we write the songs, the idea of an entirely acoustic show makes total sense. Playing all these songs now in their acoustic versions is like returning to their origins.”
Watch and see how the slower tempo and simple instrumentation creates a sadder, more haunting version of their biggest hit.

This is music at its purest form. No light show, distortion pedals, autotune and massive audiences. Spotless," wrote another.
"By far the best version of this song that I have ever heard. It totally transforms the song when performed like this," shared another.
Another commenter made a poignant observation:
"The original version is like a soundtrack for a man living in the fast-paced life in the 80's all cool and hip. This one is like when the same man grows old and saying farewell to the fun memories of his youth."
And another summed up what most people feel seeing this:
"One version makes you dance and the other version makes you cry."

In this coming of winters, there’s a gush of emotions that comes along. It’s kind of bittersweet, to be honest. For me, it’s like listening to Vital Signs’s Tum Mil Gaye, to be honest. Play that song right after, and you’ll know what I mean.
For those who enjoy the Western tracks better, I’d recommend listening to Take On Me (acoustic version) by A-ha. Such winter-esque songs these are.

The excellent ones:
- Sox Of The Fox - this is just brilliant
- Memorial Beach - Morten, why don't you sink more often in a low voice? One of a-ha's best and most underrated songs unerlines its relevance 24 years after its release.
- This Alone Is Love - Wow, and Morten's voice has power in the second half!
- Manhattan Skyline - many new elements make this a great version, especially the growing chorus
The good (and new) ones - with some surprising elements:
- Over The Treetops - It was nice to hear this one live, so I may be a bit biased as it is not too different from the album version, but hey!
- The Living Daylights - nice piano and strings and great instrumental part and guitar towards the end; Morten's voice is not too howling (is this the right term)
- The Killing Moon - The best song ever written? Maybe, and Morten's voice fits well.
- Take On Me - nice little and completely different version of this classic song, but not the masterpiece of this album
- The Sun Always Shines On TV - Great guitar riffs, better than IBLY, and I like when Ingrid sings "on TV"
- A Break In The Clouds - Good new song
- Summer Moved On - not my favoruite a-ha song and Morten's voice is struggling, but Alison Moyet's deep voice is a great contrast
- Lifelines - one of Magne's best songs which also fits in the unplugged setting even though it is not too new and different (and it hardly sounds unplugged with the full drums)
- This Is Our Home - somehow a song I have forgotten relatively quickly. But it is a nice opener and Morten sings well.
The disappointing ones
- Hunting High And Low - not too many new elements here, just a solid version of a classic song, but it lacks power in the second half, no real climax
- Stay On These Roads - a bit like HHAL, there are better versions around, e.g. the 2005/6/7 or 1991 versions
- Living A Boy's Adventure Tale - nice version but it lacks power
- I've Been Losing You - Another song which does not really fit here. It lacks power, and Morten once more sings too high in the chorus.
- Scoundrel Days - This is one of a-ha's best songs but the unplugged version is rather disappointing as Morten's voice is too howling. Not enough power.
- Analogue (All I Want) - some exiting new melodies but the chorus is as boring as it has always been, with even less power
- Forever Not Yours - I would have expected other songs like, for example, Early Morning, and this is one of the songs that does not really deliver. A bit too boring.
- Foot Of The Mountain - Very weak and another boring chorus

Thanks a lot for the promotion 😊 Hope you’ll like the episode when you get to it - I can see some clear overlaps and clear differences in your and our ranking (complicated by the fact that Jesper and I don’t even always agree even if we settle on a rank).
But overall I think we (as usual) share many of the same favourites 😉 -

I think A Break In the Clouds is a wonderful, wonderful song 😊
-
Having had another listen, I agree it is beautiful, but probably a little bit too much middle of the road. I mean Nirvana's MTV unplugged in NY is an all killer no filler album, a level a-ha don't reach I would say
