    An outstanding feat of technical innovation, "Take On Me" pulled off the impossible task of completely reversing a flop single's commercial fortunes. The original 1984 mix of "Take On Me" was ignored everywhere save for a-ha's native Norway, but a solid rerecording of the synthpop number, when paired with a stunning live-action/animated hybrid video, lead to it become not only a worldwide smash but also a-ha's signature song. Directed by "Billie Jean" mastermind Steve Barron, the video saw a-ha frontman Morten Harket and actress Bunty Bailey try to escape from a hand-drawn animated world together, with each frame painfully etched via a technique called rotoscoping. Eye-popping when it premiered, the video for "Take On Me" has taken on a life all its own, parodied and ripped-off too many times to count. The song became so popular that their follow-up single "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." was again lensed by Barron and even has a cameo of Harket's "animated" alter-ego. The band couldn't escape the legacy of "Take On Me", so they wisely went on to embrace it instead and are still recording new music up to this day.

    The early years of MTV produced some truly unforgettable videos, so it figures that more recent generations of musicians who are familiar with them would incorporate elements of them into their own video work. The four videos included here have inspired tributes from artists in more recent decades, and each of these homages involves a creative take on the original. We’re not talking about videos that merely parody the originals, but ones that make use of the elements from the originals in a truly integral way.

    1. a-ha, “Take on Me” (referenced by “Caught in the Middle” by Paramore)

    The 1985 video for a-ha’s No. 1 smash has received close to 2 billion views on YouTube. With its morphing of animated sketches and live action, a-ha’s video was both entertaining and ground-breaking, so it was only a matter of time before another musical act would pay tribute to it.

    Paramore did just that with the video for their 2018 single “Caught in the Middle.” Unlike in a-ha’s video, there is no part of Paramore’s tribute that takes place entirely in live action, but the homage becomes clear in the middle of the second verse, as lead singer Hayley Williams walks out of a trippy, tropical background into an empty white backdrop where she and her fellow band members, Taylor York and Zac Farro, turn into animated sketches.

    Two other things that “Caught in the Middle” has in common with “Take on Me” are an infectious melody and a compelling lead vocal performance, yet somehow it failed to place on any Billboard chart. At least the Computer Team-directed video has been watched more than 10 million times on YouTube.

    Norwegian synth rockers A-ha became international stars thanks to their 1985 debut LP Hunting High and Low. The album spawned several international hits, most notably “Take On Me,” which reached No. 1 in the U.S while its music video was plastered all over MTV. Hunting High and Low reached platinum sales and earned A-ha a Grammy nomination, so expectations were understandably high for its follow up. But while audiences hoped for more shiny tunes along the lines of “Take On Me,” the band’s sophomore LP offered much more experimentation. On 1986’s Scoundrel Days, A-ha varied between moments of folk, new wave and hard rock influences. While a few critics praised the group’s willingness to stretch its sound, many more were disheartened by the lack of sugary pop hits. “Cry Wolf” got some minor attention in the U.S., but the album was largely ignored by American audiences. Scoundrel Days fared much better overseas, and A-ha has continued to enjoy four decades of popularity in Europe, even as their U.S. star has faded.

    Ja, bezieht sich nur auf den US Markt. CRY WOLF war dort die letzte a-ha Single die es immerhin bis auf Platz #50 schaffte und sich insgesamt 10 Wochen halten konnte. Damit war er in Deutschland auch nicht erfolgreicher, da es auch "nur" für 10 Wochen reichte. Einzig der Peak war mit Platz #20 etwas höher gewesen. Danach hatte der Wolf, äh a-ha, sich ausgeheult und es war time to worry und die desperate jokes im Rest der Welt zu erzählen. ;)

    Stand doch in einem Interview, dass Morten ihn nicht singen wollte. Das selbe Schicksal hätte ja auch den Pål Song "Make Me Understand" ereilt, doch da konnte Magne beschwichtigend eingreifen. Beim eigenen Song gelang die Überzeugungsarbeit nicht und somit wird es ein Magne Song bleiben.

    Ja das weiß ich das Morten ihn nicht singen wollte :/, es ist halt das tolle Gefühl das aufkommt.

    Bin dankbar das es das Album True North überhaupt gibt!:thumbup:

    Hier das Interview. Versteht Ihr "because of his own belief" auch so, dass Morten mit einem vermutlich (ich kenne den Song und Text nicht) religionskritischen Song ein Problem hat? a-ha: True North interview (classicpopmag.com)

    Ich muss sagen, als klar war, da kommt nichts mehr, keine Tour, kein Wetten, dass...???? (nicht dass ich die Sendung mag, aber nur so kommen a-ha in DACH an hohe Verkkaufszahlen), da hatte ich recht schnell abgeschlossen mit TN.

    Dank des a-ha Ranking Podcasts unserer dänischen Freunde habe ich mich aber wieder mehr mit der Band beschäftigt und nach der MTV Unplugged Eposide True North wieder gehört, und das mehrmals. Der Vibe aus Unplugged ist irgendwie erhalten, wenn nicht sogar verbessert, und auch wenn ich anfangs ein großes Problem mit dem Titelsong hatte (und den immer noch als unnötigen und kitschigen SOTR Abklatsch sehe), muss man eigentlich sagen, dass True North einige Knaller und keinen schlechten Song hat; das gab es seit Analogue nicht mehr. Und der rote Faden stimmt; zwar unterscheiden sich Magne's und Paul's Songs, und auch Make me understand fällt etwas raus, aber alles in allem gibt eskeine gravierenden musikalischen Brüche. Ein großartiges Album, das eine Tour verdient hätte.

    Could one of you please post the text of the title "God is in the details" in the "the way we talk" section where we can discuss the texts more seriously? I need a lot of time to understand english when I listen to a song or an interview :ya:

    Der schottische Schauspieler David Tennant könnte Euch ein Begriff sein. Er hat z.B. mitgespielt in Good Omens, Broadchurch, In 80 Tagen um die Welt, er war der zehnte (und 14.!) Doctor Who,...

    Vor ein paar Monaten war er bei der Comic Con in New York. Bei dem Interview (s.u.) wurde er u.a. darauf angesprochen, dass er seinen Nachnamen Neil Tennant von den Pet Shop Boys zu verdanken habe. Da hat er dann erzählt, dass er eigentlich David McDonald hieß. Als er sich mit 16 Jahren bei der britischen Schauspielergewerkschaft anmelden wollte für seine erste Fernsehrolle, gab's dort schon einen Schauspieler dieses Namens. Also musste er ein paar Alternativen vorschlagen. Namen aus der Familie waren ihm nicht cool genug (er war 16 ;) ), also hat er sich eine Smash Hits-Zeitschrift geschnappt und dort nach passenden Namen gesucht. Er suchte was mit 2 Silben. Sein erster Vorschlag, Brandon (nach Kirk Brandon von der Band Spear of Destiny), wurde abgelehnt, einen David Brandon gab's schon. Sein zweiter Vorschlag war dann halt Tenannt (nach Neil Tennant), der wurde dann angenommen.

    David Tennant hat dann noch überlegt, welcher Namen es dann auch geworden sein könnte. Wer war zu der Zeit noch aktuell? Duran Duran? David Duran Duran oder David LeBon! Oder a-ha! Er hätte auch David Harket sein können! David Tennant: "Das war eine Morten Harket-Referenz! Wer hätte gedacht, dass wir heute dorthin kommen würden? Erinnert sich noch jemand an Morten Harket?" (Rückmeldung aus dem Publikum) "Er ist ein gutaussehender Junge! Ist er immer noch!"
